A visit to Muthurajawela Wetland is an easy addition to a family itinerary. Because you explore the sanctuary by motorized boat, children do not need to walk long distances. You simply sit back and watch the wildlife from the safety of your vessel.
Is the boat safari safe for kids?
Yes, the motorized fiberglass boats are safe for passengers of all ages.
Every passenger receives a life jacket at the Boat Yard before departure. You must wear this life jacket at all times while the boat is in motion. Independent, unescorted walking into the marsh is strongly discouraged for safety reasons. Staying in the boat is both the rule and the safest option.
How long does the trip take?
The standard boat safari lasts between 1.5 and 2.5 hours.
This duration is usually short enough to prevent children from getting restless. Most online tours, including transfers from Negombo or Colombo, take 3 to 4 hours in total. The trip moves through three distinct zones, keeping the scenery dynamic.

What animals will kids see in Muthurajawela?
Children usually spot macaques, water monitors, and a variety of large birds.
With 209 species of fauna, the sanctuary offers excellent wildlife viewing. Kids often enjoy looking for saltwater crocodiles camouflaged against the muddy banks. Guides will cut the engine in the Mangrove Tunnels so you can listen to bird calls. Remember that feeding any wildlife is strictly forbidden.

What should families pack for the boat ride?
Bring sun protection, drinking water, and strong insect repellent.
The boats do not always have full shade. Pack sun hats, reef-safe sunscreen, and sunglasses to cut the glare on the water. Bug spray is necessary for the dense mangrove sections. If your kids are interested in birds, bring binoculars to help them spot eagles and kingfishers.

Are there specific rules children must follow?
Kids must stay seated, keep noise down, and leave plants alone.
Loud noises can startle the birds and other animals. Teach children to keep their voices low, especially when gliding through the narrow channels. Do not let children pluck flowers or remove any natural materials from the sanctuary. Flash photography is also banned near nesting wildlife.
What is the best time of day to take kids?
The 7:00 AM departure is the best choice for families.
Temperatures are cooler in the early morning, which makes the boat ride more comfortable for children. Wildlife is also most active at this time. The Visitor Centre closes at 6:00 PM, but boats usually stop running by 4:30 PM.
